Long Creek Brush Bundling
Who: Members from Antigo Trout Unlimited, Green Bay Trout Unlimited, Marinette Trout Unlimited, Oconto River Trout Unlimited, Wisconsin River Valley Trout Unlimited, Wolf River Trout Unlimited, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources led by Taylor Curran and the Antigo Fisheries Crew.
What: Long Creek brush bundling. This section of Long Creek is just below the outlet of Long Springs and upstream of the confluence with Evergreen Creek. The project is 925 feet in length and will focus on brush bundling with Christmas trees donated by the cities of Antigo and Merrill, and Antigo Trout Unlimited. During the summer of 2024, 5 brush bundles were installed covering about 400 feet of stream. We hope to have enough bundling materials to complete this reach of stream.
Where: The project site is located on Long Creek. The work site is at the end of Shepherd Rd off of CTY P in Elton WI. There is a DNR parking lot at the end of Shepherd Rd, for this project, we can drive through the gate closer to the creek. Shepherd Rd is just over one mile south of the intersection of CTY P and STH 64. GPS coordinates: DNR parking lot 45.14691 -88.83640, creek access 45.14936 -88.83165
What to Bring? Waders, gloves, loppers
About the stream: Long Creek is a cold headwater tributary to Evergreen Creek in southeastern Langlade County. The Evergreen system is an important thermal refugee for trout in the Wolf River. Brush bundling is extremely effective in this section with one to two feet of soft sand and sediment covering the preferred gravel stream bed. These bundles will narrow the stream, flushing sand and sediment increasing depth of the stream. The bundles will collect sediment and overtime vegetate creating new bank. This project is on a unique property, it contains three spring ponds, Stillhouse, Lost and Long Springs. Over the last six years the dredging of Stillhouse and Lost Springs has been completed. We are continuing to dredge Long Springs in the summer of 2025. This is a great opportunity to see the dredge setup and explore some recently dredged spring ponds.
