Oconto River Watershed Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Is Trout in the Classroom Effective?

Trout in the Classroom gives back much more than the average eye can see. The Chapter has been involved with the program for many years and watched our Teachers thrive with limited resources. We have our Teachers networking together to help solve problems in each other’s tanks. Our area includes classrooms of various age groups, with participation from the following schools: Oconto, Oconto Falls, Lena, Suring, Gillett, Pulaski, Menominee Indian, Coleman, and Marion.

What do the students learn from the program? They learn how clean and how cold water is needed for the trout to survive. They learn their responsibility to what happens when they don’t do their part. They learn the ecosystem of the river. What keeps them alive. What kills them. What trout eat. They learn that the delicate balance of a healthy river can be determined by the life or death of a fish or even its eggs and they learn they have a role in keeping it alive.

This year, our schools were provided with Rainbow eggs. Each school learned that rainbows were more adaptable to changes in temperatures and tank life than previous years with brook trout. Each classroom had great success with their TIC program. Attached is a photo from Nicole Anderson, Oconto Middle School. (3-25-2025)
